Situated in the southwestern part of Europe, Sagres is
known as «the worlds end», the place
where « the land ends and the sea begins»,
in the words of the famous poet Camões.
In 1443 Prince Henry, fifth son of King João I
founded Vila do Infante, a nautical school, in a spot
well-suited to overseeing the expeditions to the African
coast which set sail from the Algarve. Here you can visit
the Fortress and the Wind Rose, a vast circle with radiating
points , 143 feet in diameter, market out in stone in
the ground.
